The Department of
National Defense (DND) on Thursday said it has requested the Military of the
Philippines (AFP) to reinforce its presence in the West Philippines Ocean (WPS)
in the midst of reports of new Chinese exercises nearby.
"The DND has
guided the AFP to fortify the country's presence in the WPS, following the
observed Chinese exercises near Pag-asa Island," the DND said in an
explanation.
The DND gave the
assertion following a report by Bloomberg in regards to China fabricating new
developments and recoveries in something like four vacant highlights in the
Spratlys specifically Eldad Reef, Whitsun Reef, Lankiam Cay, and Sandy Cay.
Eldad and Whitsun
Reefs are found 48 and 60 nautical miles, separately, from Pag-asa Island and
are inside the 200 nautical miles selective monetary zone (EEZ) of the
Philippines.
As per the DND,
infringement in the WPS or recovery on its highlights is a danger to the
security of Pag-asa Island "which is important for Philippine sovereign
domain."
It added that these
exercises might jeopardize the marine climate and sabotage the steadiness of
the area.
The DND approached
China to notice the current global request and try not to irritate pressures in
the WPS and South China Ocean.
"We firmly ask
China to maintain the overarching rules-based global request and forgo acts
that will worsen pressures in the West Philippine Ocean and the bigger South
China Ocean," it said.
