Tagle eyed as 1 of 2 to become next Pope - Catholic Herald

The only Catholic nation in Asia has a chance of having its first Pope in the Vatican.

This possibility was reported by a Catholic Herald report that placed Cardinal Luis Tagle as one of the two leading candidates for the next pope.

Hungarian Cardinal Péter Erdő, the archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest  is the other one.

The report came out following speculations that Pope Francis, who was reportedly had difficulty walking due to a strained knee, was nearing retirement.

The report also said that the pope also favored Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the current Vatican secretary of state.

The former Manila Archbishop was recently appointed as one of 22 members of Vatican City’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of Sacraments, which is headed by Cardinal-designate Arthur Roche.

Tagle in 2019 was appointed as the prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

According to the Catholic Herald, whoever becomes the pope will greatly shape the Vatican’s future direction — Tagle representing the more liberal route, while Erdő poised to lead it to a more conservative path.
