Opposition congressman
Edcel Lagman is making his opinions known again.
The Bicol representative was quoted saying that ABS-CBN and
TV5 should be “brave and steadfast in closing their business agreement which is
aboveboard and violates no law or regulation.”
He made the
statement after ABS-CBN and TV5 announced that they are putting the deal to a halt amid the
investigation being conducted by the House Committee on Legislative Franchises.

The lawmaker
reiterated that the deal is not a merger and ABS-CBN’s minority investment in
TV5 does not result in the acquisition of control.
Lagman said the Lopez
owned company’s investment will also enhance the competition in the broadcast
industry.
According to Lagman,
requiring TV5 and ABS-CBN to seek prior approval by the National
Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the Philippine Competition Commission
(PCC), and/or Congress before consummating the agreement is not only a
violation of the right to contract but is a prior restraint on press freedom
and free speech.
