PH scraps Russian helicopter deal for fear of US sanctions

The dream of the former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to have a Russian made helicopters for the Philippine Air Force (PAF) is not going to push through.

While this was pushed to have better relations with Russia, there is one hitch in the plan.

The Philippines has no choice but to scrap the 17 Russian Mi-17 helicopter deal which is valued at P12.7 billion ($227 million), because of fears of US sanctions under CAATSA.

The helicopter deal was approved last month by then President Duterte, or before their terms in office ended on June 30.

Former defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana says, 'We could face sanctions' from the US if the Philippines pushes through with purchasing Russian military transport choppers”.

A down payment of an undisclosed amount has already been made in January.

The Russian Mi-17 helicopter has a maximum speed of 280 km/h (170 mph, 150 knots) and a range of 800 km. The Mi-17 has a crew of two pilots and one engineer and is capable of transporting 24 soldiers or 12 stretchers internally.
