PH Army eyes combat utility choppers from Japan

The modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is a continuing one, most especially for the Philippine Army (PA).

Years and years of neglect the organization tries to get back its lost capabilities as they are now actively pursuing the full reinstatement of the Army Aviation Regiment.

According to Philippine Army chief Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said they were interested in acquiring helicopters from Japan .

Currently the PA’s Army Avaiation Regiment has 60 pilots.

The PA Chief will personally fly to Japan to sign the terms of reference for the Army’s cooperation activities with Japan. Last month, the Philippine Air Force and Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force held joint drills at Clark Air Base to enhance interoperability in humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

According to MaxDefense

“This may involve the Fuji-Bell UH-1J Huey, which are equivalent to the Super Hueys used by the Philippine Air Force. These are enhanced UH-1H Hueys with more powerful engines and other improvements, and were produced in the 1980s by Japan's Fuji Heavy Industries (now Subaru Corporation).

If the Philippine Army has sufficient funding, this could also mean the possible acquisition of the Subaru-Bell 412EPX, aka the Subaru-Bell UH-2 utility helicopter.”
