Most Filipinos are fully supporting
the construction of a nuclear power plant in the Philippines, according to a
poll conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia Inc.
Held from June 16-22, 2022, the
firm’s 2022 PAHAYAG Second Quarter Survey showed that 59% out of 1,500
registered Filipino voters respondents ‘approve’ or ‘strongly approve’ of
‘allowing’ its construction while 22% said they ‘disapprove’ or ‘strongly
disapprove’.
“Our survey numbers suggest that
proposals to add nuclear power to the Philippine energy mix may enjoy
considerable support among the general public. At the same time, nuclear energy’s
relatively high disapproval rate indicates that it could be a polarizing issue
in future policy discussions,” said Atty. Aureli Sinsuat, Executive Director of
PUBLiCUS.
In March, then leading presidential
candidate Bongbong Marcos said “there is no reason na bakit hindi kaya ng
Pilipino na magpatakbo ng nuclear power plant” when asked about the potential
revival of the mothballed $2.3 billion Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) during
a one-on-one presidential interview.
“When it comes to nuclear power as an
idea, well, let’s just follow the science because dito naging political sa
Pilipinas. It’s also political in other places but in our particular case, the
reason we have no power plant at all is pure politics. Did not really follow
the science. So we have to look into it,” he remarked at the time.
In the same month, then President
Rodrigo Roa Duterte released Executive Order (EO) No. 164, signed on February
28, 2022, stating that “nuclear power shall be tapped as a viable alternative
baseload power source along with alternative energy resources, to address the
projected decline of coal-fired power plants which come under increasing
environmental opposition;”
Presently there are over 400
operational nuclear power plants in 30 countries including US, UK, China,
India, South Korea and Japan among others. JOSE RONALD F. SIONGCO/GDM
