GREAT NEWS!!!: After 34 years, PH has working nuclear reactor!

 

I never knew it was possible in this lifetime.

 

But lo and behold, suddenly a viral post from Mr. Gino Aliperio about the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute came to our attention.

 

It has always been the dream to have a low cost energy for a developing country like ours, the late President Ferdinand Marcos knew this and had the foresight to make the country a nuclear power plant for our developing needs.

June 23, 2022 at 2:47 PM, History was made for the Philippines.

 

According to the viral PNRI post “all of the 44 fuel rods have been successfully loaded to the Philippine Research Reactor 1 - SATER core.

According to DOST-PNRI, the Philippine Research Reactor-1 Subcritical Assembly for Training, Education, and Research (PRR-1 SATER), is the country’s sole nuclear reactor training facility.

 

The moment is of such significance because after four decades the country has a working nuclear reactor. Indeed this is a big step towards the dream of incoming President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for a viable power-mix for the power industry.

 

The PNRI said it began loading of TRIGA nuclear fuel in the core of PRR-1 SATER, signaling the start of its nuclear commissioning.

 

“The country has now a working nuclear reactor after 34 years. This is definitely a big step towards a nuclear powered Philippines. Kudos to the Nuclear Reactor Operations Section!!” the post said.

The PRR-1 SATER has the following objectives as a nuclear facility:

• Support nuclear manpower development
• Accommodate local access to an operating nuclear facility
• Train reactor operators, users, and regulators
• Engage stakeholders in nuclear and reactor engineering
• Repurpose available resources of the historical PRR-1 facility

Once commissioned, the facility operators will apply for full operating license as it opens its doors to the research and academic community who will be given access the facility.

The project was first conceptualized in 2014, but actual work in the facility began in 2017. It is expected to be fully operational by 2023. While not yet fully operational, the facility will be open for technical visits and awareness seminars on nuclear science and technology.
