Why a landslide win for BBM and Sara

With Bongbong and Inday Sara on the same team, she can truly be his partner in national recovery.

The landslide victory of Bongbong Marcos (BBM) and Inday Sara Duterte as the next president and vice president of the Philippines has an explanation.

Upon seizing the presidency in 1986, a vindictive President Corazon Aquino started her relentless persecution of ex-President Ferdinand Marcos and his family. Aquino made sure that the Marcoses were demonized in every way possible.

Criminal cases were filed against President Marcos, all focusing on his allegedly ill-gotten wealth. The closest associates of President Marcos were likewise persecuted, and labelled as his “cronies.”

President Marcos, whom the Americans brought to Hawaii at the close of the so-called February 1986 EDSA Revolt, wanted to return to the Philippines to defend himself in court. Aquino refused to allow Marcos’ repatriation.

That refusal notwithstanding, the criminal cases against President Marcos were still pursued by Aquino’s hand-picked Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG), which was headed by an ex-senator whose ambition to become president in either 1973 or 1977 was effectively derailed by the advent of Marcos’ martial law proclamation in September 1972.

The big irony of it all is that the PCGG was seen by many as corrupt and incompetent. Many of its officials and so-called “agents” abused their powers. They symbolized institutionalized corruption, and became the purported “evil” they were supposed to fiscalize in the first place.

After 36 years of existence, the public money spent on the operations and expenses of the PCGG was far more than the alleged “ill-gotten wealth” it supposedly recovered for the country.

Aquino and her lackeys continued the demonization of President Marcos even after Aquino stepped down from power in 1992. Her hatred survived her own death, and continued during the administration of her son, President Noynoy Aquino.

After President Marcos died in 1989, the hate-filled Corazon Aquino refused to allow Marcos’ remains to be returned to the Philippines. Four presidents after Aquino ignored the issue. It was only the strong-willed President Rodrigo Duterte who finally paved the way for the rightful burial of President Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Even that burial, lawful and proper under the Constitution and the law, was hatefully opposed by sectors closely allied with the Aquino family.

After some stocktaking, the contemporary electorate had had enough of the vindictiveness of the Aquinos, and the anti-Marcos propaganda peddled by the Aquinos and their allies. They also saw in BBM their hope for a better tomorrow, since he has already proved himself a competent local government official, and a hardworking legislator.

The people’s disapproval for everything the Aquinos and their minions stood for was undoubtedly manifested last 9 May, when the voters overwhelmingly gave their blessings to BBM.
Just as monumental is the victory of Inday Sara.

Her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, has the political will to lead the nation.

President Duterte’s quarantine measures saved the lives of many Filipinos during the Covid-19 pandemic. Drug lords were neutralized and drug users surrendered. The streets were safe again for everyone. Infrastructure development was everywhere.

Only the Liberal Party and its opportunistic members were dissatisfied.

Reelecting President Duterte would have allowed a continuation of his accomplishments, but the Constitution forbids a second term for any sitting president.

This is where Inday Sara comes in. She is an independent-minded person, but she is still her father’s daughter, and she will want to continue her father’s political legacy and accomplishments.

A tough and dedicated Davao City Mayor, Inday Sara has the requisite experience demanded by high public office. She also shares her father’s displeasure with incompetence and corruption in the government service. Voters saw a continuation of President Duterte’s accomplishment in Inday Sara, and elected her.

With BBM and Inday Sara on the same team, she can truly be his partner in national recovery, and continue her father’s legacy of no-nonsense public service.

That, in a nutshell, explains why Bongbong and Inday Sara won by a landslide in the elections.
