"Unfinished (Drug) War'

Keen followers of President Rodrigo Duterte understand his decision to remain neutral in the presidential derby, which is deeply rooted in his desire to complete his signature war on drugs and the dearth of commitment among the wannabes.

It is evident that the President does not find the quality of the aspirants to be adequate in finally writing finis to the campaign.

When he took office, President Duterte vowed to end the drug proliferation nationwide within three to six months, but later admitted that it would take his entire six-year term to finish the menace considering the seriousness of the problem.

His determination to eradicate the supply of illegal substances goes beyond his political stature.

“If we cannot control the flow of drugs, then I will consider my presidency a total failure. So, I do not want that to happen,” Mr. Duterte said in a recent address.

When asked about his criteria for the bet that will get his anointment, he said the next leader should be as committed as he is in stopping the proliferation of illegal drugs.

What happens after he steps down bothers President Duterte as he raised the concern over the possible resurgence of the narcotics trade.

Just recently, the yield of anti-drug operations has been increasing, which indicates that the drug syndicates are already positioning for a revival after 30 June.

“My only concern if that if they are really as committed as me in fighting the insurgency and the drug problem of our country. That’s my worry,” the Chief Executive said.

As a lawyer, Mr. Duterte knows the extent at which he can carry out his campaign against narcotics while engaging the syndicates in a verbal tussle.

The scorching words he dished out against criminals and drug pushers were then used as ammunition by pseudo rights groups and political foes to pin the President on alleged extrajudicial killings.

The President does not want six years of committed efforts against the social plague to go to waste if the disciples of evil, who ruled the previous regime and had built a powerful drugs network, will be able to make a comeback under his successor.
