Presidential counsel Atty. Sal Panelo made a statement regarding
the senatorial candidacy of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in the national
elections of 2022.
According to Panelo, if Duterte wins a seat in the senate, he will
be a great asset to the institution.
Panelo, in a recent interview over “The
Chiefs” program on One News, said the President is qualified to run for senator
given his experience not only as a Chief Executive and lawyer but also as a
former congressman of Davao.

Panelo himself is also seeking a senate
seat in the 2022 elections.
“Hindi din dapat
tawaran na bilang tagatupad ng batas sa huling limang taon, si Pangulong
Duterte ang may pinakamalawak na karanasan kung anong mga batas ang
kinakailangan para umunlad ang bansa at iangat sa kahirapan ang ating mga
kababayan. Kaya sa tingin ko, kailangan natin ang Pangulo sa Senado,” Panelo
said.
He also denied that
Duterte would pull out of the senatorial elections. “Walang sinasabi si
(Pangulong Duterte) na magwi-withdraw siya,” he said.
Duterte initially wanted
to run for vice president but pulled out due to the public sentiment such bid
might be unconstitutional. He then announced about his planned retirement from
politics. Days later, he changed his mind and filed his candidacy for senator
in the 2022 elections.
