The modernization and
build up of the Armed Forces of the Philippines is moving, though slow to some,
what is important it is moving.
On the Philippine Army
front and the Philippine Navy’s elite Marines – they have a reason to smile.
As reported a team of defense and military officers visited
South Korea for a joint visual inspection of used rocket systems and a surplus
warship that will be handed over by the Seoul government to the Philippines.

The Philippine Army and the Philippine Marine Corps are the
direct recipients of 22 Kooryong multiple launch rocket systems from the Korean
Army. These would include equipment and ammunition. These were expected to be
handed over to the Philippines in the next few months though this was first
publicly announced in 2019.

South Korea has been major source of military equipment and
hardware for the country- from military trucks to its most modern jet fighters
the FA50’s. In the past year, Hyundai Heavy Industries delivered two
Rizal-class frigates for the Philippine Navy worth P16 billion.
It will be the first time the country will have a
Multi-Launch Rocket System (MLRS) platform, this has been the dream of the
Philipine Army and have only experienced using it during one of the staging of
the annual RP-US Balikatan exercises.
The South Korean made
K136 Kooryong Multi-Launch Rocket System (MLRS) have a range of of 48
kilometers to 80 kilometers and that it is composed of four batteries with one
going to the Philippine Marine Corps.
A team of defense and military officers was in South Korea in early November for a joint visual inspection of used rocket systems and an anti-submarine warship offered by the Seoul government. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO |
