GOOD NEWS: DBM approves funds for 6 offshore patrol vessels (OPV's) of Philippine Navy

Department of National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana  is surely making his mark as the best person who ever occupied that post.

In a speaking engagement that the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines under the administration of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is at full swing.

In that same occasion where he confirmed the acquisition of 32 brand new Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk combat utility helicopters for the Philippine Air Force from Sikorsky's Polish subsidiary PZL Mielec he also said of another big ticket modernization for the Philippine Navy is also on the approved.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) had also approved the release of Php30 billion to fund the acquisition of 6 new Offshore Patrol Vessels, which are still being negotiated with Australian shipbuilder Austal. The Philippine Navy's OPV Acquisition Project is part of Horizon 2 phase priority projects.

“No contracts yet. Still under negotiation,” Lorenzana clarified.

In naval parlance an OPV is a large vessel capable of long-distance patrolling.

Austal is offering a larger version of its 80-meter Cape-class patrol vessels being used by the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Border Force.
