A foreigner, cannot help himself but be
proud of our Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte when the latter addressed
the United Nations General Assembly recently.
“I agree with you that it seems that certain
western countries seem to be stockpiling vaccines and have more than adequate
supplies of vaccines for every man, woman and child in their country and then
some, yet the only way I believe for the world to overcome this pandemic would
be for the world to be fully vaccinated and thus much needed vaccines to be
also shared with developing countries too. “
“The Philippines deserves better. It’s clear
to me that you care very much about the people of Philippines and that you are
doing an excellent job as President. I only wish you had longer in office to
see the Philippines through this awful pandemic. Obviously when you were first
elected, you could not have never predicted or even imagined this pandemic
would have happened. “

For purposes of truthfulness and clarity we
have quoted in full the said social media post of Mr. Malcolm Conlan below:
To His Excellency
President Rodrigo Duterte,
Malacanang Palace
Manila
Philippines
Dear President Duterte,
I hope you don’t mind
me writing to you personally again, but I just wanted to thank you for your
excellent speech to the United Nations General Assembly earlier today.
I was very impressed
with your comments too regarding supplies of COVID Vaccines. I agree with you
that it seems that certain western countries seem to be stockpiling vaccines
and have more than adequate supplies of vaccines for every man, woman and child
in their country and then some, yet the only way I believe for the world to
overcome this pandemic would be for the world to be fully vaccinated and thus
much needed vaccines to be also shared with developing countries too.
It seems ridiculous to
me that the Philippines has been forced to purchase their own supplies of
vaccines when there are still many in the Philippines who can’t even afford to
eat 3 times a day!!!
I believe the world
should step up and send more vaccines urgently to the Philippines. I know that
you mentioned that the Philippines has already donated a million dollars to the
COVAX, a worthy gesture of which the world should respect. This is practical
diplomacy and will undoubtedly help many people.
The Philippines
deserves better. It’s clear to me that you care very much about the people of
Philippines and that you are doing an excellent job as President. I only wish
you had longer in office to see the Philippines through this awful pandemic.
Obviously when you were first elected, you could not have never predicted or
even imagined this pandemic would have happened.
There are so many OFW’s
worldwide who are working hard in other countries and helping them through the
pandemic, many Filipinos have even lost their lives through their sacrifices.
Many OFW’s can’t even
go home to the Philippines, due to the Philippines being on the red list and
the costs of quarantine and leave needed on their return. I believe the world
should repay their sacrifices and endeavours by ensuring that their own
families and loved ones in the Philippines are able to be fully vaccinated as a
matter of urgency.
Now the world is
talking about a booster vaccine being necessary and yet vaccine supplies are
very slow in reaching the Philippines. (Through no fault of you or your
administration). I believe the Philippines would need to least 200 million
doses to fully vaccinate everyone in the Philippines, then another 60 million
doses on a yearly basis moving forward.
I do hope those rich nations
and indeed the western world including the United Kingdom, steps up and ensures
that the Philippines and her people can be fully vaccinated (to all those who
want the vaccine) as a matter of urgency.
I agree with all your
other comments and statements you delivered and believe you spoke as the true
statesman that you are.
Thank you sir for
having the courage to speak up and inform the UN of their responsibilities and
position in the world. I continue to support you.
It pains me that there
are so many Filipinos that are suffering because of this pandemic and I believe
the world should do more to help the Philippines through this pandemic as a
matter of urgency.
Respectfully yours and
maraming Salamat po sir,
Malcolm conlan
