Pres. Duterte wants more AFP funds after Sulu plane crash

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte flew to the Naval Forces for Western Mindanao in Zamboanga City to visit and honor the remains of the soldiers who perished in the fiery crash of the C-130 military plane in Patikul on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

He conferred the Order of Lapu-Lapu with the Rank of Kalasag to the fallen soldiers, most of whom were new graduates of military training.

They were supposed to bolster the battalions deployed in Sulu to fight Abu Sayyaf, a jihadi group involved in kidnap-for-ransom operations, bomb attacks, and piracy.

“I commiserate with you. I am as sorrowful as you and as commander-in-chief, I am the most hurt,” the President told the military after the brief ceremony.

“I am at a loss of words, so I will end up here or else I will end up crying also like you,” he said, before ending his seven-minute speech.

Duterte added that he wanted to allocate more funds for the benefits of soldiers and their families in case they die while in the line of duty, as well as their pension.

“This, I promise you, soldiers, I have said this before, we are still working on it, but I want to give more funds for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP),” he said.

“That’s the only way that we can repay our soldiers, especially those who died. What’s important is that their families will be protected, their families will be comfortable and the education of the children will be assured,” Duterte added.

“This is one of the worst tragic incidents that happened in our Armed Forces,” he said.

While the aircraft was not brand new, the plane was in very good condition, Arevalo said. It had 11,000 flying hours left before it was due for maintenance.

The second-hand Hercules C-130 which crashed Sunday was acquired from the United States and delivered to the Philippines earlier this year. Two other planes are being repaired overseas, while another has been grounded following the crash.
