The Duterte administration undoubtedly shifted to a
significant change with respect to is foreign relations policy, when it opened
catered to having a more robust relations with China, Russia, Israel, and India
to name a few.
Others have deemed this move as drastic change and
neglect of its relationship with its oldest and only military ally the United
States of America (USA).
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said during the meeting
with Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) executives and
other government officials on July 7, that “I made friends with China, but I
never abandoned our relationship with America. Wala naman akong sinabing
masakit sa kanila.”

“The Filipinos must realize na ang Amerikano
nandito not because they want to defend us, ito ‘yong battleground nila. So
nandito sila because instead of fighting it out in the state of California,
they would rather do it here in the Philippines, kung may battleground man
tayo,” he added. “Historically kung hindi sila napunta rito at ‘yong World War
II nadale tayo, it’s because nandito sila.”
President
Duterte added, “‘Yong ibang countries na wala sila, hindi man ginalaw ng Hapon.
At kasi nandito tayo, so we suffered, well, water under the bridge. But ganoon
na nga we – subjugation and then another – the worse the subjugation of Spain
for 400 years sa ating bayan.”
“We
were in our land, our forefathers were really treated as second-class citizens,
if not, as slaves. Kaya matagal naman ‘yan, but hindi sabihin mo it – time can
erase those… Ang ano ko lang, siguro ‘yong lolo ng lolo ko, o tatay ng lolo ko
noon, how they must have suffered a foreign subjugation,” he said. “Kaya
neutral tayo, China, I make friends with China. Hindi naman ako talaga – they
offered to help. If the aid is coming, good. If not, okay lang rin sa akin
because we do not make friends in anticipation of what they can give to us.
That is stupid. We make friends because we just like to be friends.”
