UP Prof slams 1SAMBAYAN's list - ‘Wow, ito ba ‘yung pinangangalandakan niyo?”

 

Expectations is far from what is real.

After the announcement of the opposition coalition 1SAMBAYAN’s possible candidates for the national 2022 elections, a political analyst expressed her disappointment over the picks, calling some of them “stale.”

University of the Philippines’ Department of Political Science. Prof. Clarita Carlos in an interview said that some names that the politicians released by 1SAMBAYAN were all too familiar and did not create any buzz.

“I would consider the names that they had put for are some stale. Like panis. I’m sorry to use that cruel word. It’s like pagkatingin ko ng pangalan, parang gusto kong humikab. Parang ‘Wow, ito ba ‘yung pinangangalandakan niyo?” said Carlos.

The UP Professor added that 1SAMBAYAN’s announcement of endorsed candidates last Saturday may have already violated election laws.

“Don’t you think this is part of campaigning? It’s like the absurd reaction of Comelec (Commission on Elections) na ‘No, that’s not a violation because they have not filed their candidacy.’ How absurd is that?” said Carlos.

Last Independence Day, the opposition coalition made public the list of potential bets for the 2022 elections, including Vice President Leni Robredo, former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Sen. Grace Poe, Citizens’ Battle Against Corruption Rep. Eddie Villanueva, Atty. Chel Diokno, and Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto.

Except for Robredo and Trillanes, everyone has already officially backed out, saying they would rather focus on their current work.

“I look at names I know there, they’re practically elites. These are oligarchs and you know the larger part of our population really does not belong to that particular group,” said Carlos. “You cannot take a stance and label everybody else and tire everybody else with an evil or bad brush. It doesn’t work that way.”

As an advise,Carlos told the opposition coalition to be more inclusive in their strategy.

“I’ll tell them to get off your high horse please and talk to the people kasi ‘yang mga salitang ginagamit niyong mabulaklak, wala na, nakakayamot na. Let’s have something new,” said Carlos. “I’m sure I’m not alone in that kind of reaction.”
