Trillanes guns for Presidency, says VP Robredo eyes governorship in Bicol

Apparently Vice President Leni Robredo is out for the national position and is gearing up for a governatorial run in her home province- Camarines Sur in the 2022 elections.

Former Senator Sonny Trillanes declared his intention to run for the highest position in 2022 and vie for the nomination of 1SAMBAYANAN coalition.

Trillanes states that Magdalo group has decided to change his status from being an alternate candidate to Robredo to being a principal candidate. He, however, clarified that should Robredo decide to run for president, he will gladly withdraw his candidacy.

“I am not dividing the opposition as there will only be one unified slate to be nominated by 1SAMBAYAN, and both VP Leni and myself have committed to support and campaign for its nominees. Just to further stress this point, in the event that VP Leni definitely decides to run for president before 1SAMBAYAN picks its nominees in July, I would wholeheartedly step aside,” said Trillanes in a Facebook post.

1SAMBAYAN was launched last March as a national coalition of democratic forces which aims to form a unified opposition.

Retired Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, 1SAMBAYANAN convenor is quiet as to the specific names they would field but it is confident te opposition will succeed as against the administration’s candidates.

“They must have winnability, must be honest, (must have) integrity, (must be) competent, and must have a vision,” said Carpio

Trillanes states that 2022 elections will be “the most important election in our nation’s history after 1986” due to the failed leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte.

“Not only our democracy is at stake, but our very survival as a country is also at stake. In just five years, Duterte has been able to destroy our institutions, bankrupted the economy, worsened poverty and corruption, surrendered our interests in the WPS (West Philippine Sea), and promoted incompetence in public service,” said Trillanes. “The Philippines would not survive another six years of a Duterte rule.”

With this, Trillanes stressed the importance of a united opposition, calling on more support from frustrated Filipinos.

“You can help by spreading the truth to your family and friends about Duterte and what’s happening in our country,” said Trillanes. “I am confident na tatalunin natin sila. Once we win, we would then have the opportunity to rebuild our country and let our people finally enjoy the blessings of democracy.”
