Different situation with the West Philippine Sea

On the other side of the archipelago, the country is embroiled in a territorial dispute with China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Brunei.

The 2012 Scarborough stand off with China started it all, the Philippine vessels back out of the area after apprehending Chinese poachers. The previous administration claims that there was an American brokered deal for both the Philippines and China to leave the area amicably. The Philippine side withdrew from the area, China stayed.

The creation of the artificial island since then began and was eventually finished to a military grade forward base.

It is unknown from the Philippine side who ordered the withdrawal of Philippine vessels in 2012.
