BREAKING NEWS : The issue about Ivermectin

A lot has been said about the Ivermectin to be the possible miracle drug against COVID-19.

Recently the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on April 8 granted a compassionate special permit for hospital’s use of the drug ivermectin for COVID-19 patients.

FDA Director General Eric Domingo said the drug is now the subject of clinical trials to check its efficacy. “Ivermectin is an investigational product and we know that there are ongoing clinical trials on its use for COVID-19.”

Ivermectin products currently registered in the Philippines are for veterinary use.

There has been an open letter doing the rounds in social media supposedly written by Dra. Maritess Gozon- Viterbo which discusses this Ivermectin drug.

For purposes of public knowledge we are also quoting Dra. Maritess Gozon-Viterbo’s open letter below:

I cannot stay silent about the Ivermectin issue any longer. My opinion might be unpopular as of the moment, but I just want to speak out about the issue because I feel that it has been unjustly denigrated both in mainstream and social media. I’ve even seen news that doctors can get jailed for just dispensing Ivermectin! Why? What is it about this drug that warrants such extreme vilification?

True, it was discovered in 1975 as a veterinary drug, but it has likewise been approved for human use in 1987. It has cured millions of people from parasitic diseases, such as river blindness and filariasis. In fact, the one who discovered it, Satoshi Imura, won a Nobel Prize for “discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites.” Billions of doses of Ivermectin have been administered to humans and it has an excellent safety profile. In fact, it is included in the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.

Now, some scientists and medical experts have seen that Ivermectin can potentially be used against Covid-19. I have also heard personal anecdotes to that effect. I know that it sounds ridiculous for an antiparasitic to be used against a virus, but this is not a new thing. There are a lot of “repurposed” drugs in the market today, such as sildenafil (Viagra) which is originally an antihypertensive drug, or amantadine which is an antiviral that is now mainly used to treat Parkinson’s. Repurposing drugs actually saves a lot of time and effort because the safety profiles of these drugs are already known. We know now that time is of the essence as more than 50 million people have been infected with Covid-19 worldwide and we are about to breach the 3 million death mark. Now we have been presented with this drug that is potentially affordable and (should realistically be accessible) to everyone.

I have been reading and researching about its use against Covid, and I see potential. There is a chance that it may work in preventing and treating Covid-19, and it is VERY safe as long as you take it in the proper dosage. I may be wrong and it may have no effect against the coronavirus, but what do I have to lose aside from a few parasites?

At this point, where I think you will all agree that we are basically left to fend for ourselves, I will not hesitate to let my loved ones take Ivermectin, if there is even a remote chance that this may save them.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the doctors who have put their names on the line (believe me, they earn nothing from this) and have advocated to give Ivermectin a chance. This is all it really needs.
