Nuclear Armed French Sub Patrols South China Sea

The French navy is in Asia to be specific in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

A few month’s back Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin, Jr. announced that the country will have its own submarines which will be sourced from France.

This week it was reported that the French Rubis-class nuclear-powered attack submarine Émeraude (S604) together with French support ship Seine (A604) conducted a freedom of navigation patrol in the South China Sea, French Minister of Defence Florence Parly said.

“Mission Marianne: since September, a nuclear attack submarine (SNA Émeraude) and a support vessel (BSAM Seine) have sailed up to 15,000 km from the metropolitan coasts in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific,” Paryly said in a tweet.

She explained that the mission aims “to enrich our knowledge of this area and to affirm that international law is the only rule that is valid, whatever the sea in which we sail.”

Parly noted that France, an Indo-Pacific nation, “has the 2nd largest exclusive economic zone in the world (11 million km2 of which 9 are in the Indo-Pacific). We intend to protect our sovereignty and our interests.”
