Duterte: US Needs To Pay For Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA)

 

The President in his speech in Clark Airbase in Pampanga made it clear if the US wants the VFA to remain to be in effect, it has to “pay”.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is very clear in his pronouncement that the US should give its oldest military ally in Asia something in return, most especially since the latter is the “nearest, possible and convenient outpost,” Duterte said.

“You want the Visiting Forces Agreement done? Well, you have to pay. It’s a shared responsibility. But your share of responsibility does not come free because after all when the war breaks out, we all pay. We’re nearest to the garrison there, a lot of arsenals of the Chinese armed forces… I hope that the Americans would take notice of that,” he said.

It might be remembered that the Duterte admin has dormally notified the US the country’s intent to revoke the VFA last February 2020.

However, the VFA remains in effect after President Duterte ordered last June of 2020 that the suspension of VFA termination “in light of political and other developments in the region”.
