The decision of the Department of Nation Defense (DND) through Secretary
Delfin Lorenzana is sending the shockwaves from all those who have been the
so-called defenders of democracy.
Senator Risa Hontiveros has slammed the decision of the DND to abrogate
the agreement which bars the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines
(AFP) and police officers from the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“I denounce the unilateral termination of the
longstanding UP-DND Accord,” she said.
“Kung desidido ang administrasyon maghanap ng
komunista, pagdiskitahan nila yung mga komunistang lantarang nanghihimasok sa
West Philippine Sea,” Hontiveros said.
“Needlessly propping up the ‘communist
bogeyman’ has always been an obscene vanity project and an excuse for their red
tagging and disregard for basic human rights,” she said.
“The University of the Philippines is a bastion
of student activism and its grounds must continue to be a safe space for
dissent and peaceful assembly,” she added.
DND’s stand
SND Lorenzana said he found the agreement a
“hindrance in providing effective security, safety and welfare of the students,
faculty and employees of UP,” as he claimed the Maoist-led rebels have been
using the university’s campus grounds as recruiting area for armed guerrillas
fighting the government.
“In the pursuit of true national peace and
development, it is time to terminate or abrogate the existing agreement with
the end view of protecting and securing the institution and the youth against
the enemies of the Filipino people without sacrificing the freedoms that we
have preserved for about 30 years.”
