UP Lawyer slams Kiko Pangilinan politically motivated call for mandatory use of bodycams by PNP

The recent call of Opposition senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan to make the use of body cams as mandatory for policemen was not exactly met with such enthusiasm.

Mainly because this was done with a political flavor, since the government authorities were able to arrest peasant group leader and activist Amanda Echanis on charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives.

Groups and human rights advocates are claiming that the arrest are replete with flaws and irregularities.

“Proteksyon ito ng publiko sa maaaring pang-aabuso ng kapangyarihan at karahasan ng mga pulis tulad ng pagtanim ng ebidensya, illegal na pag-aresto, at maging ng pagpatay (We need to protect the public against the possibility of police abuse of power or use of violence such as planting of evidence, illegal arrest, and even killings),” the opposition senator said in a statement.

“Bukod kay Amanda, libo-libo pa ang naaresto o namatay sa kamay ng mga police na maaaring tinaniman ng ebidensya. Hanggang ngayon, hindi pa rin nila nakakamtam ang hustisya (Aside from Amanda, thousands have been arrested or even killed by the police, possibly on planted evidence. Until now, justice is still not served),” he added.

Senate Bill 42 is authored by Pangilinan, one of the four bills filed in Senate to require law enforcers to wear and use body cameras in their operations.

University of the Philippines educated lawyer Atty. Nick Nañgit salams the Liberal Party stalwart for this political call.

In his Facebook post last July 11, calls out Pangilinan and makes use of the same thrashy reasons the opposition would throw at the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte whenever policies are being laid down for the Filipino people.

Atty. Nick also took note that this bill has slept for four years in the Senate, and it is only now being used by Pangilinan to take a swipe at government at a time the Anti-Terrorism is already a full pledge law of the land.

2016 pa yan, pero na-tengga! Anyare ha?

Tas ngayon, gusto mo nang isulong?! Nga pala, may Anti-Terrorism Act na kasi. Nangangatog na ba mga butu-buto mo?

At saka, may pandemya pa, uunahin pa ba yan??? Kelangan ng mga Pinoy ang gamot, pagkain, at eyebags remover!
