US donates ‘Smart Weapons’ to the Philippines

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as whole got a shot in the arm because of the donation of the much sought modern weapons/munitions from the United States of America (USA).

The defense articles were received by Secretary of Foreign Affairs Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. in a ceremonial turn over attended by National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon, Jr., Ambassador Elizabeth P. Buensuceso, Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the Undersecretary for Policy, and National Defense Assistant Secretary Teodoro Cirilo T. Torralba III.

“On behalf of President Trump – I am pleased to transfer package of precision guided munitions including 100 TOW 2A missiles, 12 ITAS, 24 Mk 82,” O’Brien said during the ceremony.

“The delivery of the defense articles is in fulfilment of President Donald J. Trump’s commitment to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte during a phone call in April 2020 in support of the Philippines’ counterterrorism efforts,”DFA said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs received from US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien a precision-guided munition package to the Philippines worth US$18 million (around PHP868 million).

Some of the weapons handed over include 100 “tube-launched optically tracked, wire-guided” TOW-2A missiles, 12 improved target acquisition systems (ITAS), and 24 Mark-82 bombs and associated guidance kits to convert these into smart bombs.
