The former Philippine National Police Director General is of
the opinion that the testimonies and the personalities that uttered them are
credible.
Senator Panfilo Lacson said this statement after the
different testimonies of former leaders of the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels
against leftist movements during the Senate committee hearing he convened.
In the next scheduled senate hearing, regarding the red-tagging
issue former Rep. Neri Colmenares and the progressive Makabayan bloc will be
allowed to defend themselves against the allegation of military officials that
they are a threat to national security.

Early this week, Committee on National Defense and Security,
Peace, Unification and Reconciliation chaired by Lacson conducted its hybrid
hearing on proposed Senate (SR) Resolution 559, which aims to exercise its
oversight authority over the defense sector on the issue of red-tagging or
red-baiting of certain celebrities, personalities, institutions, and
organizations.
It was in that hearing Jeffrey Celiz, a self-confessed former
NPA intelligence officer, claimed that members of left-leaning partylist groups
have links with the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic
Front-New People’s Army (CPP-NDF-NPA).
Lacson was asked about the testimonty of Celiz, “Without
rebuttal from those whom he implicated in the recruitment of minors based on what
he claims his personal knowledge, not to mention the corroborative testimonies
of the other rebel returnees, so far they may have sounded credible.”
The legislators from the House of Representatives comprising
the Makabayan bloc (the Bayan Muna, Alliance of Concerned Teachers,
Kabataan, and Gabriela) was
invited to the hearing, but decided to snubbed the senate committee hearng for
various reasons.
Asked
whether there will be a second chance for the Makabayan bloc to attend the
hearing to defend their ranks, Lacson said, “Yes, in the spirit of fairness, I
will call for another hearing depending on the availability or willingness of
the party-list groups and/or their organizations to participate.”
“It is unfair for
the committee to shut out either party to prevent them from confronting any
issue that may need an immediate response,” Lacson pointed out in a text
message.
