Winwyn Marquez Tops Reservist Training, Joins the Philippine Marine Corps

Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 Winner Teresita Sen "Winwyn" Marquez graduated as the Top 1 Cadet in this year’s Basic Citizen Military Course (BCMC) conducted through the Naval Reserve Center-NCR earlier today, November 22, 2020. The Flag Officer-in-Command, Philippine Navy Vice Admiral Giovanni Carlo J. Bacordo PN personally presented the Top 1 Award and Certificate of Completion to Mr. Joey Marquez, who accepted the recognitions on behalf of his daughter who is unable to attend due to her current locked-in taping in Bulacan. The 6-month course aims to prepare Filipino civilians, who want to enlist in the naval reserve force, in the rudiments of military discipline and service. Cadet Marquez, who is also the elected Class President of BCMC Class 01-2020, chose to continue her reservist journey through the Philippine Marine Corps along with 18 members of her class including Cadet Matthew Madamba Nr 1 from BCMC Class 02-2020, and Cadet Vincent Dominic Panlilio Nr 1 from Military Orientation Course Class 01-2020.

When asked why she chose to join the Marines, the beauty queen-turned-reservist explained, "When the pandemic in the country started, my sister and I spearheaded a donation drive to help our frontliners. Despite the complications brought by the pandemic, my friend Sgt Jaimie Sarmiento PN(M) (Res) supported my project all the way. She and other Marines helped me transport and distribute the donations to different areas of Metro Manila without asking anything in return. That's when I appreciated the unit's commitment for service and I realized that I want to be part of that culture. I have a desire to help others and I want to serve like that. I want to empower the Filipino youth, especially the women, to go out of their comfort zone and serve the Philippines. I want to support our troops and their families who endure all sorts of sacrifices just so they can protect us Filipinos. I also want to spread public awareness and knowledge of the Marines' efforts in keeping us safe. There are so many things I want to do and I want to do all of through the Philippine Marine Corps."

A licensed teacher and a youth empowerment advocate, Cadet Marquez will join the Marine Corps Public Affairs Office (MCPAO) to help in the dissemination of information about the Philippine Marines' competencies, values, and contributions in safeguarding the Filipino nation and our maritime state.
