The clash between to nuclear armed countries China and the
United States in the South China Sea (SCS) would be catastrophic in the sense
that the Philippines cannot take sides, whether we like it or not we will be dragged
into it and worse a collateral damage to that scenario.
This was the picture Department of National Defense chief
Defin Lorenzana is trying to convey in the forum hosted by the Stratbase ADR
Institute
As two superpowers in the South China Sea making their
presene felt more and creating a lot of interest and time to the security

“This then is the crux of the security challenge in the Indo-Pacific
region, the looming confrontation of the US and its allies and China for
the South China Sea,” Lorenzana said.
While the US and China assert that their actions are defensive in
nature, Lorenzana said “the fear of miscalculation is ever present like the
near collision of two frigates belonging to the US and China two years ago.”
Lorenzana continued: “If ever a shooting war happens, Philippines which is
right smack in the middle of the conflict will be involved whether she likes it
or not.”
Lorenzana explains that th country has been very cautious in dealings with the
US and China in relation to the South China Sea dispute. Both countries is courting
the Philippines support as they know the Philippines “crucial role” in the
region.
“Everyone knows what President Duterte did to
move the country towards China. Some say it’s good for
the country, some say it is bad,” Lorenzana went on.
