Take that South Korea!: Palace lauds re-exportation of SoKor waste

Only during his administration.

Remember when President Rodrigo Roa Duterte cursed the Canadian government for the many containers of garbage, that was eventually shipped back to Canadian soil?

He did it again, Malacanang welcomed the re-exportation of illegal waste shipments back to South Korea as an “environmental victory” for the Philippines.

“We also laud the efforts of those in the Bureau of Customs Collection District X, who coordinated with the concerned parties and authorities in making the return of the smuggled garbage to South Korea possible,” according to Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar.

South Korea was able to export to the Philippines several tons of imported discarded plastic materials which arrived in the province of Misamis Oriental, Northern Mindanao in 2018.

“This victory doesn’t only represent environmental justice, but also medical and health justice for every Filipino. This as hazardous materials may have been included in the exportation which could have affected millions of Filipinos if left unchecked and neglected,” Andanar said in a statement.

The Duterte administration’s commitment and political will, Andanar added, played a key role in the timely and successful re-exportation of South Korean garbage.

“We, in the Duterte administration, will remain vigilant and in cognizance on matters of global waste smuggling to prevent instances, such as this, that could greatly and negatively impact our country on different levels,” Andanar said.
