Palparan to serve jail sentence unless pardoned by Pres. Duterte

A few days ago, former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Rafael Alunan floated the idea of the release of retired Army Major General Jovito Palparan.

“Treated unfairly after killing a transvestite? Then free Jovy Palparan. He was doing his duty fighting enemies of the state,” Alunan said in his Facebook account.

Malacanang has heard the suggestion of the former DILG Secretary, and has said that Palparan will remain in jail unless President Rodrigo Duterte declares to grant him.

It was Atty. Harry Roque, Presidential Spokesperson who made theremark after Alunan suggested Palparan’s release after President Duterte granted absolute pardon to US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Pemberton.

“There’s been a factual decision made by the (Regional Trial Court) na lumabag po siya sa batas (that he violated the law). Pinatawan po siya ng parusa (He was already sentenced),” Roque said in a virtual presser.

Roque said Palparan’s freedom lies in Duterte’s hands.

“And unless the President gives him pardon, he has to serve his sentence,” he added.

The retired general has been serving his time in Muntinlupa National Penitentiary.

Palparan was convicted for the kidnapping and illegal detention of two University of the Philippines (UP) students in 2006.
