European Parliament calls out PH Govt: "renew the broadcast license of the main audio-visual group, ABS-CBN"

The image of the Philippines in Europe really took a beating, aside from the adopted resolution of the EU Parliament calling for immediate trade sanctions against the Philippines because of the alleged “rapidly deteriorating human rights" situation and extrajudicial killings under the administration of Rodrigo Duterte.

The EU Parliament also adopted a resolution calling out the Philippines’ government under the leadership of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to grant the Lopez controlled ABS-CBN corporation a broadcast license.

The parliament is alarmed by the “deteriorating level of press freedom” in the country as evidenced by the ABS-CBN closure and the conviction of Rappler founder and chief executive officer Maria Ressa.

[The parliament] condemns all threats, harassment, intimidation, unfair prosecutions, and violence against journalists, including the case of Maria Ressa; calls for all politically motivated charges against her and her colleagues to be dropped,” read the resolution which had 626 votes in favor, 7 against and 52 abstentions.

“[The parliament] recalls that press freedom and freedom of expression are fundamental components of democracy; calls on the Philippine authorities to renew the broadcast licence of the main audio-visual group, ABS-CBN,” it added.

ABS-CBN’s legislative franchise expired last May 5, and the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Franchises did not grant the issuance of a new legislative franchise last July.
