President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in
his nationally televised public addressed took a swipe at the Vice President
for her statements made regarding the perceived no concrete plan by the government
in battling the pandemic brought about by the coronavirus disease or COVID-19.
Duterte told Leni Robredo to
stop adding “fuel to the fire.”
He reminded the Vice President
that would only destroy the government if she continues to criticize his
administration’s policies in tackling the COVID-19 health crisis.
“Please
do not add fuel to the fire. You will just destroy government. Do not destroy
the government because you will destroy people. If the government is destroyed,
we will all float,” the chief executive said in a mix of English and Filipino.
The Chief
Executive added that destroying the government — or even his death — would not
the solve the country’s problems.
“Even
if you say that I will die tomorrow, it cannot solve the problem of the
country,” he said.
The
statement made by Duterte was prompted by the 20 minute public speech of
Robredo where she claims that there are apprehensions by businessmen to resume
operations because of the lack of
confidence in the administration’s pandemic response.
The
75 year old President from Davao, reminded Robredo should be careful in making
baseless accusations at a time when “people are desperate.”
“Let
me emphasize: Confidence keeps the economy rolling. And the truth is, even
before the pandemic, our economy could not reach its full potential because of
lack of confidence,” Robredo said.
“This
is why, especially now that we are grappling with a pandemic, the last thing
that we need is even more instances that erode confidence,” she added.
