PH Navy holds flag raising in Fuga Island; AFP reports a Marine detachment established

Good News for a change.

It was reported recently that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) last August 8 personnel of Naval Forces Northern Luzon (NFNL) conducted a flag raising ceremony with residents of Fuga Island.

A day before that, a Marine detachment was establish in the island.

NOLCOM said the Marine detachment was established “to constitute and execute the plans of AFP to build defense facilities on the island, which will include a sheltered pier, a naval station, and a 20-hectare littoral monitoring detachment.”

“Fuga Island is a part of the Babuyan Archipelago, the second-northernmost island of the country, it was recently known for the existence of an airfield and is significantly close to fiber optic cables that connect the Philippines to mainland Asia and is key to the country’s push for better internet and communication infrastructure,” NOLCOM said.

It was revealed recently announced by Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Giovanni Carlo Bacordo that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte gave order to reserve 20 hectares on the strategically-located island for establishment of a naval detachment to be used by the AFP.

Fuga Island “is like a dagger pointed at the very heart of the country. If it falls into the hands of a foreign power with immense global ambition to achieve and great national interest to preserve, it will certainly cause the country a very serious and dangerous security problem,” Former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said
