TV5, GMA-7 owners did not violate laws, seek to play ‘kingmaker o kingslayer’ - HS Cayetano

The House Speaker is on the defensive after Congress killed the bid of the Lopez-controlled ABS-CBN Corporation to have its legislative franchise renewed.
Speaker Alan Cayetano gave an example as regards the other tv companies such as GMA-7 and TV5. He said the respective owners neither abused the freedom of the press, “screwed our people” nor violated the country’s election laws.

“The GMA and TV5 franchises – as well as hundreds more – where approved without a hitch. That is because their exercise of the freedom of speech and of the Press, was never employed to mask the corporate practices of their owners that screwed the system and our people – to the tune of billions of pesos,” Cayetano said.

The Speaker also adds that these broadcast stations also did not play kingmaker or kingslayer during the past elections.
“While the newscast of their journalists were as feisty as ABSCBN – and in my case, even feistier at times – their owners did not violate election laws nor sought to play Kingmaker, or Kingslayer,” he said.
He said the House of Representatives will “never tolerate anyone, including oligarchs, who will abuse the system and cheat both the government and our people.”
