Signing of terror law institutes ‘state terrorism’ against dissent - Lagman

The Albay Representative Edcel Lagman continues to oppose the Anti-Terrorism Law of 2020 even after it was already signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
Lagman laments that the signing of the said law “further stifles dissent, imposes prior restraint to freedom of expression, derogates civil liberties, and institutes state terrorism.”

“The new anti-terror law repeals the less repressive ‘Human Security Act of 2007’ which provided for safeguards for fundamental freedoms,” the the veteran opposition lawmaker said.

“These safeguards were all obliterated by the ‘Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020’ and replaced with motherhood declarations which are orphaned by oppressive provisions,” he said.
The proposed measure after months of strong opposition and dissent coming from different groups namely from the opposition, progressive and human rights groups, has been signed into a law just this Friday (July 3.)
The Albay representative said the new law “installs national security to a high pedestal while it demotes civil liberties to a lowly footstool.”

Bayan Muna’s Zarate calls it a horrific day

Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate said President Rodrigo Duterte’s signing of the Anti-Terrorism Act “did not come as a surprise since he certified it as urgent to concentrate more tyrannical powers in his hands at the expense of the rights of our people.”
“This is indeed a horrific day for the country as another darker era for human rights looms. Malacanang naman din ang naglamadali ng terror bill na iyan kaya di na nakakapagtaka,” Zarate adds.
