Opposition senator
Risa Hontiveros has a mouthful for the Duterte administration’s handling of the
coronavirus pandemic.
Hontiveros said with
the series of all record breaking numbers of positive COVID-19 cases in the
country he is urging the government to stop its militaristic approach of problem
the deadly virus from Wuhan, China.
"We need to
rethink our militaristic and police-centered approach to the problem,"
Hontiveros said.

It is the opinion of
the senator that "heightened medical visibility," is more necessary
than heightened militaristic visibility, saying "we need an army of health
professionals" to combat COVID-19.
"We also need to ensure that every health
worker is compensated justly and has access to personal protective
equipment," Hontiveros added.
"We need to remind the government to treat
the COVID-19 crisis as a health crisis...the numbers are alarming and clearly,
we are not winning. We cannot mass arrest our way out of this health
problem."
The opposition
senator made the statement after the country has registered more than 50,000 confirmed
COVID-19 cases.
A University of the
Philippines (UP) researcher made public his study that COVID-19 cases in the
country could breach 100,000 by the end of August.
