President
Rodrigo Roa Duterte in his fifth State of the Nation Address(SONA) reiterated
his call for the Philippine Congress to revive the death penalty by lethal
injection.
He
made such call in the Batasan Pambansa when all of the nation is listening to his
speech.
“I
reiterate the swift passage of a law reviving death penalty by lethal injection
for crimes specified under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002,” President
Rodrigo Roa Duterte said.

Duterte has been consistent with his call since he assumed office of Malacanang in 2016, that the death penalty should e revived to sow fear to those personalities that has committed the crimes specified under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
The
call for the revival of the death penalty act is not solely for the heinous
crimes related to illegal drugs, but also includes the crime of plunder.
It
might be recalled that the country suspended the implementation of the imposition
of death penalty in 2006 when then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed
Republic Act No. 9346.
The
last person convicted and sentenced to death by lethal injection was Leo
Echegaray.
