As
expected the current head of the Liberal Party senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan
is leading the charge in opposing the revival of the Death penalty in the
Senate.
A
day after the President’s speech in his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA)
he urged Congress to create a law reviving death penalty for drug-related
crimes by lethal injection.
“I
reiterate the swift passage of a law reviving death penalty by lethal injection
for crimes specified under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002,”
President Rodrigo Duterte said.

Pangilinan
in a statement said the President has gotten all his priorities wrong.
“Ang
dapat i-lethal injection ay yung COVID at ang patuloy na pagkalat nito. Ang
dapat parusahan ay ang mga nagnanakaw ng pondo ng PhilHealth at DoH yan ang
dapat tinututukan ng gobyerno hindi itong death penalty,” he said.
Pangilinan
is very much firm in his opinion that the death penalty should not be revived.
In
2017 the House of Representatives passed a bill reviving death penalty, but the
Senate did not act on it.
