Philippine Daily Inquirer Randy David has never
seen this before.
Officials of the Lopez-controlled ABS-CBN
Corporation went through the process as mandated by law for the renewal of
their fresh 25 year legislative franchise only to be denied in the end.
Members of the House Committee on Legislative
Franchises voted 70-11 denying the Kapamilya network of a new
franchise needed to resume their broadcast operations.

This has been viewed as a continuation and
worsening at the same time of press freedom under the President Rodrgo Roa
Duterte administration.
This event David calls as something worse when the
Lopez family saw their beloved company taken over during the Marcos years.
"Mas masahol pa doon (martial law seizure) ang
nangyari. Sapagkat alam mo na noong 1972, the military just took over the
[TV/radio] station," David said in an interview with ABS-CBN's TeleRadyo.
"Pero eto, idinaan pa sa batas kuno. Ginamit
pa ang mga proseso ng batas upang bigyan nila ng justification ang isang
conclusion na matagal na nilang ginawa."
The 70-11 margin was
unbelievable
House Committee on
Legislative Franchises permanently shut down
the Kapamilya network when the result of the vote was announced an overwhelming
majority 70 votes as against 11 who favors the granting of a new franchise.
David said the result was “unbelievable.”
"Ano ibig
sabihin nu'n? May taga-kumpas at sumusunod ang karamihan dito? At sino
sinusunod nila dito? Sino pa kung hindi 'yung nagmamaang-maangan na kunwari
walang kagagawan? Na sa simula't simula na sinabi na, 'Hangga't ako ang
Pangulo, hindi kayo mabibigyan ng renewal ng franchise'," David said.
