The statement of
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte dismantling of oligarchies in the country has created
a lot of buzz to the point everyone has his own stake of what it means.
Opposition senators lambasted
the President for what they call a mis aligned priorities, because they
attribute the permanent closure of the Lopez controlled ABS-CBN Corporation to
the loss of 11,000 employees directly being employed in the network, at the tie
of this health epidemic.
Albay representative
Edcel Lagman even said that “economic oligarchy” is ok because “military
oligarchy” or appointing of retired high ranking military or police officials
in key positions in government is much more dangerous than the former.
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and President |
House Speaker
Cayetano in his defense to the detractors of President Duterte said the
declaration of war against oligarchies in the country is also hard for the Chief
Executive because some of those people he has to target are his friends.
“There are good
people and there are bad people in the oligarchy and in the oligarchic system
there are good and bad people…I was in the room with him many, many times, it
breaks the President’s heart,” said Cayetano.
Cayetano said that
the President is only carrying out his campaign promise to destroy those
oligarchies that is stunting the growth of the country, even if such
oligarchies are his friends/allies.
“Anyway, ilang
henerasyon na rin namang nakinabang yung mga pamilyang ito. Hindi naman natin
inaagaw sa kanila negosyo,” said Cayetano. “Sila (oligarchs) mismo, meron bang
ama o ina na hindi sinasabi sa anak, anak, may mga kinailangan akong gawin sa
henerasyon ko kasi ito ang sistema. Pero ngayon na magbabago na yung sistema,
gawin nyo ‘yung tama,” he added.
