After ABS-CBN: Defensor targets Lopez clan dealings with Meralco

The crown jewel of the Lopezes business have been permanently shutdown by the denial of Congress of its application for a new 25 year franchise.
And this act is nothing but historic in a sense that everybody knows that the Lopez-controlled Kapamilya network has played the role of a kingmaker in the political scene as the biggest media company in the country.

Partylist congressman Mike Defensor made an announcement that the next “death blow” is to the power oligarchy of the Lopez-clan.
In a speech he presented before the halls of Congress before the historic 70-11 vote that killed the ABS-CBN franchise, Defensor reasoned out that ABS-CBN’s dominance was just a means to an end to the Lopezes’ alleged control of power plants providing electricity to Meralco’s millions of customers.

“History will show that if ever we vote to kill this franchise for violations of the Constitution and laws ,that we did service to our country by killing another oligarchy,” said Defensor.
Defensor who is also a former Cabinet Secretary made it also his personal quest to carry out President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s to put to stop all oligarchs, with the Lopez clan as his number one target.

“When the President mentioned that we should dismantle oligarchies in the Philippine, he is referring to the small group controlling our country, the future of each Filipino.
In the scheduled hearing of the House committee on good government, Defensor vowed to lead the inquiry and review of 25-year power supply agreements (ending in 2025 and 2027) signed between the Lopezes’ power plants and Meralco when it was still owned by the family in 1994 still owned the electricity distributor in 1995 and 1999.

The Lopez family sold there Meralco stocks to Indonesian mogul led Salim-Metro Pacific group, along with the Gokongwei family.
