The Makabayan bloc is
telling President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to veto what they deemed as a turn for
the worse in terms of human rights abuses if it will become a law- Anti-Terrorism
Act of 2020.
This after it was
reported that the said bill have been submitted to Malacanang and its awaiting President
Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s signature.
Kabataan party-list
Rep. Sarah Elago and ACT Teachers
party-list Rep. France Castro has asked the Chief
Executive to veto the said measure which aims to amend the Human Security Act
of 2017.

“Patuloy na nananawagan ang taumbayan para sa
pagbabasura ng Anti-Terror Bill dahil nakita nila ang mga masasahol na
probisyong aapak sa karapatang pantao ng Pilipino sa panahon na maisabatas
ito,” Castro said.
“It is about time that the Duterte administration
listen to the calls of the people and veto this measure,” the Makabayan
congresswoman explains.
“This bill only will be used to terrorize the
people and silence dissent, criticism and opposition. Even legitimate and
Constitutionally guaranteed rights can be tagged as terrorist acts under this
bill,” she said.
As for Elago she challenges President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to veto the
bill and to “instead address and focus on the pressing needs and concerns of
the Filipino people amid the Covid-19 crisis.”
“The bill, ironically, would be responsible for
sowing fear and permitting an omnipotent state to do anything as it pleases,”
she said.
“The
military and political allies of the regime will be immunized from its
horrifying effects, while the rest of the population, especially the poor and
marginalized, would be repeatedly beaten down to submission by the baton of the
military state.” Elago said.
“Now more than ever, the youth and the people
are united and resolute to junk the terror bill that will curtail the basic
human rights enshrined in our Constitution,” she said.
