Chel Diokno as the current chairman of the Free
Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) just made a statement regarding the continued denial
of visitors to detained opposition senator Leila De Lima is a direct violation
of the latter’s constitutional rights as well as established international laws.
“It’s a blatant
violation of the Constitution and of international treaties which our
government is legally bound to follow,” he said in his social media post.
“Sen.
Leila is innocent until proven guilty, and must be treated that way,” he
pointed out.

The
erstwhile defeated Otso diretso candidate made the statement when he along with
senator De Lima’s Chief of Staff Atty. Fhillip Sawali, a priest Father Flavie Villanueva upon presentation of their ID’s was made to wait
for the detained senator and was eventually denied by the Philippine National
Police (PNP) entry in visiting the senator, last June 5.
“This just confirms
the incommunicado detention of Sen. Leila,” Diokno said in his social media
posts.
“Hindi
ito makatao,” he stressed.
The
PNP explains that it is just implementing the rules regarding the possivle
spreading of the novel coronavirus 209 disease or COVID-19 inside the PNP Camp
Crame detention facilities.
De
Lima who is considered as the fiercest critic of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte
in the Senate has been detained since 2017 for her alleged involvement in proliferation
of illegal drugs in the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa city.
