The ABS-CBN chairman emeritus Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III got an
unlikely ally in former senator and now Sorsogon Governor Chiz Escudero, as the
latter de facto lawyered for the embattled ABS-CBN Corporation head.
Escudero said in
defense of Gabby Lopez that based on the 1935, 1973, and 1987 constitutions,
Lopez is a Filipino citizen because his parents are both Filipinos.
Not having a Filipino
passport does not mean Gabby Lopez III is not s Filipino Escudero explains.

It is the Philippine constitution
and the law that grants citizenship, not a passport, he added.
“Based on the 1935, 1973, and 1987 Constitutions of
the Philippines, Mr. Gabby Lopez is a Filipino citizen for the simple reason
that his parents are both citizens of the Philippines.
It is the Constitution and the law or the courts
that grant or take away citizenship, not a passport,” Escudero posted.
Gabby Lopez during the House of Representative joint hearing of the House committee on legislative
franchises and the committee on good government and public accountability on the ABS-CBN’s application for a new legislative franchise
said he both an American and Filipino citizen, or what
is commonly called as a “dual citizen.”
I stand by my record over the last 35 years. I have been committed to
the people of this country. It is a trust that has been passed on to me by my
father and my father before him,” said Lopez.
Lopez also said that Congressmen should go beyond the technicality of his citizenship as per the Constitution and talk about his allegiance, his record in the service of the Filipino spanning more than three (3) decades will speak highly of him.
“If you are going to look beyond the technicality and talk about my
allegiance, please look at my record for the past 35 years,” he said.
