Malacanang says Ortagus’ comment on Ressa’s conviction not good for PH-US relations

Ressa is the cause of another bump in the Philippine-United States of America relation.
After the verdict of conviction was handed down by the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 36 for cyber libel the US State Department issued a press statement regarding the matter.

The United States is concerned by the trial court’s verdict against journalists Maria Ressa and Reynaldo Santos and calls for resolution of the case in a way that reinforces the U.S. and Philippines’ long shared commitment to freedom of expression, including for members of the press.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque reacted to the criticism of the US Department since it does not sit well with the current robust and friendly relations with both countries.

According to Roque, the country’s libel laws has the same exact libel laws that of the US.

So, wag po kayo magreklamo dahil in-apply lang ng hukom yung jurisprudence na kinakailangan naman, merong some kind of diligence in reporting, at hindi pupuwedeng bara-bara,” Roque also said.
