One
of the principal authors of the Anti-Terrorism Bill in the Senate has directly
and conclusively stated that the said measure was not meant to give more powers
to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte but the primordial reason for its enactment is
for the protection of Filipinos from the threat of terrorism.
Senator
Panfilo Lacson stressed this fact to silence one and for all the continuous
accusations from the opponents of the proposed measure, for they say this will
only allow the government to go after its critics and dissenters.
Lacson
said the protection of people from terrorism was also his main consideration
when he voted in favor of the 2007 Human Security Act, even
though then there is
the same issue that it will be abused by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s
administration.

“The
Anti-terrorism bill has nothing to do with this president. It is all about the
security and protection of our country and people. I had expressed very serious
reservations in passing the Human Security Act of 2007 because of ex-Pres
Arroyo. I voted YES nevertheless,” Lacson said in a post on his Twitter.
In
an earlier interview with the Senator he said there is a massive disinformation
campaign to stop the passage of the measure into a law, but at the same time he
is confident the truth will eventually prevail.
