'Top NPA extortionist killed in Northern Samar'




Good news for the people of Northern Samar.
The Philippine Army reported that they were able to neutralize a notorious member of the New People’s Army (NPA) who has been dreaded for his various extortion activities in an upland village in Palapag townNorthern Samar.
The notorious NPA member was identified to be Zaldy Meraya alias "Podyot", finance officer of the NPA in the province he was killed in a firefight in a remote Bagacay village,in Palapag town, this according to Lt. Col. Juan Gullem, commander of the Philippine Army’s 20th Infantry Battalion (IB).

“The government troops were about to serve a warrant of arrest issued by Judge Decoroso Turla dated May 11, 2020 for multiple attempted murder, when he fired his gun, which triggered a brief armed engagement,” Gullem said.
The operation was a continuation of the military operation conducted last June 14 which led to the discovery of the government troops of an NPA lair that can accommodate 50 fighters with 21 makeshift bunkers, four posts, and toilets.

Resident gave the tip to the government troops after they realized the presence of the communist rebel in their area.

The rebels have been threatening government contractors and business establishments in the area.
