Now it can be known by everybody that ABS-CBN chairman
emeritus Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III is indeed both a
natural-born Filipino citizen and an American citizen.
This after the Department
of Justice (DOJ) has affirmed such fact, this was
testified to by Justice Undersecretary Emmeline Aglipay-Villar during the ongoing
House committee legislative franchises hearings.
Villar said Lopez is both
a natural-born Filipino citizen and an American citizen by virtue of the 1935
Constitution since his parents were both Filipinos.

“Ang pag-confirm sa citizenship ni
Mr. Gabby Lopez, sa kanyang pagkapanganak siya ay Filipino citizen,” Villar
said during the House inquiry.
But Villar stressed that Lopez also
can’t deny the fact that he’s a U.S. citizen under the virtue of “jus soli” or
right of birthplace guaranteed under the 14th Amendment of the U.S
Constitution.
Gabby Lopez was born in Boston,
Massachusetts.
“Siya rin ay American citizen dahil
doon siya pinanganak,” said Villar.
According to Villar, Gabby Lopez’s
use of U.S. passport for most of his life is not a reason in losing his
Filipino citizenship.
“Ang paggamit ng U.S. passport ay
hindi rin dahilan ng pagkawala niya ng Filipino citizenship,” she said.
In the same
legislative inquiry, ABS-CBN chairman emeritus revealed that he was only able
to obtain a Philippine passport back in 2001 and he’s been using his U.S.
passport to travel even until such time that he assumed the chairmanship of
ABS-CBN from his father, Eugenio Jr. in 1996.
He also told the
House panel during the said hearing that he was able to vote in the last 2016
US presidential elections where the Republican real estate billionaire Donald
Trump won.
