In the ever evolving
story regarding the bid of the Lopez controlled ABS-CBN Corporation for a
new legislative franchise to resume broadcast operations grounds to a halt when
as reported by Politiko website, the Iglesia ni Kristo has joined the fray
preventing them to have one.
According to the
report influential religious group has confirmed its involvement in blocking
the ABS-CBN franchise renewal in the House of Representatives as a respected
member leads the group of legislators opposition to the franchise application.

Rodante Marcoleta spoke in behalf of those against ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal
bid during the first joint committee hearing held on the matter last Tuesday
(May 26).

Marcoleta gave
reasons as to why Congress should not grant ABS-CBN a new legislative franchise.
Instances of the network
of evading taxes, violating labor laws and the constitutional ban on foreign
ownership of media entities, as well as biased political coverage, where laid down
by Marcoleta as ABS-CBN’s violations.
He also took not that
normally franchises given to media companies does not go beyond 50 years as
stated in the Constitution, but ABS-CBN has gone beyond that threshold as it
has been in operation for 53 years.
“It is but right for
the House of Representatives to deny this time the franchise of ABS-CBN,” he
said.
