newest, modern, and biggest Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel built in France , Philippine
Coast Guard (PCG)
“Dumating
na sa Pilipinas ang BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301) o ang pinakabago at
pinakamalaking barko ng Tanod Baybayin ng Pilipinas,” the PCG said.
As
reported earlier the PCG will be using the OPV as a transport ship while
government is battling the novel coronavirus 2019 disease or COVID-19, however,
designating it as a quarantine ship is also a possibility.

“Sa
kasagsagan ng banta ng COVID-19, gagamitin ang barkong ito sa pagbibiyahe ng
mga medical supplies, PPE, gamot, pati na rin mga frontliners tulad ng mga
medical workers sa mga regional hospitals sa buong bansa,” PCG said.
Moreover,
the PCG said it is willing to designate the offshore patrol vessel as a
quarantine ship, as the need arises.
Considered
as the largest and most advanced aluminum hull OPV in the world to date, the
BRP Gabriela Silang can ferry approximately 500 people at one time.
According
to the PCG, the Offshore Patrol vessel has a range of 8,000 nautical miles at 15 knots and an
endurance of up to five weeks of operation. It has an excellent sea keeping
ability and maneuverability on top of the great comfort it offers for people
onboard.
