Opposition senator Risa Hontiveros
is urging the Department of Health (DOH) to so more with respect to the testing
of persons who are asymptomatic of the novel coronavirus 2019 disease or COVID-19.
In a prepared statement,
Hontiveros said testing is the only way to find out if a person is an
asymptomatic carrier of COVID-19.
“Given what we now know,
government should not be prevented from testing asymptomatic persons, since it
is clear that even people without symptoms of COVID-19 can carry and spread the
disease among their families and communities. We have to test as many people as
we can, as soon as we can,” she said.

Currently, the Department of
Health (DOH) due to the limited availability of testing kits prioritizes
patients exhibiting symptoms for COVID-19.
Priority is also given to
frontliners and members of the vulnerable sectors – senior citizens and persons
with disabilities (PWD’s).
The opposition senator is
hoping more will be tested as the local government units starts their mass
testing.
“Our testing protocols need
to be updated to adapt to emerging realities on the ground, especially if the
ECQ is extended to May. Our testing objectives must be expanded to service
entire communities, frontliners, the elderly and immunocompromised persons,”
she said.
